A soft breeze caressed the grassy fields rampant throughout the territory of the Kogas. The lakes rippled gently, the trees whispered, and the cattails pushed against each other in a pointless fight. Yet, despite the breeze, it was warm. It was very warm, marking the obvious presence of spring. Of course, when spring rolls around, an array of preparations and recoveries after the cold, dark winter days. It was nice to feel the sun, witnessing the rebirth of flowers and trees, watching the earth become alive once again for the seasons ahead.

Oh, but not everyone really appreciates the beauty of nature found in the plants and sunlight. A slick tongue ran along the lips of one Shikoku-Inu, sitting calmly and patiently along the bank of the lake just outside of the Koga Village. This said canine was a descendant of the long-line of the Kogas, pure in Shikoku-Inu blood through and through. And, just like his ancestors, he was quite the revolting character as seen through some "pure-hearted" relatives. His heart retained the old, ancient ways of the Koga, and he remained adamant.

This young Koga was not to be taken lightly. His spring duties did not involve the new redecoration of the Alps. He didn't really care, actually. What he appreciated about spring was the pheromones in the air of young fertile females. The Koga was oblivious to the aftermath of any sort of unfortunate female; he did not care about her feelings, her pain, her life afterward. He didn't even know if he had children out there... he didn't care. He lived in the moment, enjoying the pleasure right then and there. The only lucky females he wouldn't care to attempt were the ones within the Village. He was a loyal resident, a loyal member of the Koga pack.

The wind was not cooperating with the Koga's needs, blowing into his face and limiting his choices, but he did not want to move. The scents of females were faint from his position, far across to the other side of the lake, and even beyond that. But the young canine was never disappointed about this. Spring and summer were a long period of time, and he would undoubtedly run into youthful girlies. The thought resulted in another hungry lip-licking, shivers running his body. Oh, this was going to be a great season...

The half breed walked through the grounds of the Koga village openly. Openly, but not welcome. She was allowed, or had been so far, to remain within its confines. Though Doku had tried very hard to chase her, if only verbally, from the village she was still here. The other Kogas had been suspicious, perhaps bitter and prejudiced, but not as overly hostile as the older male. Still, she was not welcome. That much was quite evident. She looked far too much like the perfect visual representation of an old animosity to be welcomed... and it was almost worse once they discovered she was a half-breed.

An Iga might have been treated with anger and hot words but not the revulsion she had encountered.

A soft sigh escaped from her muzzle as she made her way with the light footfalls that only another from one of the ninja clans would be able to imitate. At least the weather was growing consistently warmer. The ice and snow were melting, giving way from the bitterly cold nights to ones of more comfortable temperatures and the world was renewing itself. It was always fascinating to watch it do so and she had taken the time to stroll. If she could not recline in friendly company she could at least walk outside and herald in the newly coming season.

For all of her logic and all of her training, Naoto was still young. Three years wasn't a long time, especially when compared against some of the elders within the Koga clan or the dogs of Ohu. The finely tuned ninja responses and reactions were there but the hard-gained faint bit of paranoia, the little mental battle scars that reminded an older dog of what to watch out for, what to keep on alert for, were not there just yet.

It was quite embarrassing to not initially know someone else was there. A hard learned lesson and one that could mean serious repercussions in the future. It might even mean so now if this dog was apt to take out a buried grudge on a dog that had stumbled into his midst.

She let her brown eyes flick along the male's body, taking in his stature and appearance before she respectfully kept her gaze averted. He wasn't an elder but she had found that being doubly respectful to any of the Koga dogs at least gave them pause before they tried to outright attack. "Pardon my intrusion." Of course, anyone could walk anywhere if they were allowed here but, again, she found it best to err on the side of caution. Most likely, he would just snarl something at her and storm off or tell her to get out of his sight. That was what most of the others did.

A new scent penetrated his already sniffed out area. His nostrils flared aggressively, scrutinizing the aroma little by little. It was difficult to tell with this blasted breeze averting his wants into different directions all over the place! A slight snarl creased one side of his face before he shook his head and relaxed his face. No need to get angry, sir. No need to be a fool. Oh, but his eyes were able to pick up something! In his peripheral vision, at least, which caused him to jerk his head in the direction of a fine white sheila.

"Pardon my intrusion."

A sly smile etched along his muzzle, his eyes softened, but with foul intentions hidden deep within them. He didn't know of her name, nor her origin. Nor could he even distinguish her breed. It was an interesting mixture, but the one thing he knew was that this was a young female, perhaps somewhat fertile, emitting some perfume that makes males crawl up on their bellies, wanting her more than anything. He wasn't completely sure; the breeze, again, never seemed to want to work for him. In season or not, Kaito didn't care. She was a female. That's all that mattered to this hormone-driven canine.

In a cool, suave voice, peppered with some sweetness and overall friendliness, "It's not a problem, miss." Kaito became curious as to why a female like her would be wandering about the Koga Village. Was she welcomed here? She seemed oddly cautious, which threw him off. But he somewhat hoped that she was not of Ou relations. Kaito never liked the fact that the Kogas allied with that god-forsaken Ou fools. They were completely against everything he believed in. Tesshin was so soft-hearted. Kaito wanted to get rid of him; however, he avoids that traitor, so he wasn't even sure if he stayed in Ou and the Koga Village was under better leadership.

Kaito relieved himself of those thoughts, focusing solely on the new face. He kept his head turned, his blue eyes observed from top to down then up again. She was a fine specimen. He licked his lips with a slight pang of hunger, but best covered it up with a spark of a conversation. "Now, for what reason would a fine miss such as yourself be wandering around the Village? You do not seem to be much of a Koga, thus making me wonder." A flashy smile was directed toward her, still putting on such a friendly face. "I'm Kaito, one of the Koga ninja dogs of this Village. Do I have permission to ask for yours?" He lowered his head, his ears pinned back in a fake-submissive manner, all the more to seem like the nice guy.

Naoto was honestly surprised at the young male's reaction. There was no spitting the word 'half-breed' at her, no growls and glares and no stalking off to ignore her. Instead, she was greeted with a civility and a friendly nature. It was something that she hadn't expected and for a brief few seconds it threw her off. She supposed that since Tess had been kind to her, in a way, that she shouldn't be surprised if there were some of the Koga dogs who would treat her at least moderately nicely. She just hadn't experienced it so far.

The easygoing, conversational manner was new to her amongst the dogs in this place. Normally she was being offered the chance to ask questions and she was the one doing all of the talking. There was always the chance of subterfuge, of luring your enemy into believing that they were safe and secure before attacking; Naoto was quite aware of that tactic. However, it never even occurred to her that a young male might have different ideas of tactics and "attacking".

"My name is Naoto," she offered. There was no reason not to. Even if she denied him her name if he resided in the village he would hear of it eventually. There was no reason for her to hide. He was being quite welcoming, though she did wonder if that would change once she spoke more of herself. Perhaps not. Perhaps he was just simply friendly or at least pretended to be polite while hiding an inner disgust. Those were easier to deal with than death threats or glares. "I have been... allowed to stay within the village for the time being." Allowed tentatively. At least, no one had chased her out and they'd had opportunities to do so.

The dark brown eyes studied Kaito as they spoke. He was a fine specimen of a Koga. Fit, young; obviously at ease with his capabilities and with the world in question. Just an attractive young male taking the chance to relax as spring came upon them and see the world shifting around him. She could understand that. That had been what lead her out here, after all.

"I had hoped to seek out some training past what my parents could give me," the young female finally put it out for him to hear it. He could deduce everything about her lineage from those words if he wanted to. Perhaps he would ignore it or choose to believe she was merely a Shikoku cross that had an alarming amount of white. Perhaps he wouldn't care. Perhaps she would just make one more enemy in this little area of the world, though.

"My name is Naoto. I have been... allowed to stay within the village for the time being."

It was very interesting to see such a fine lady observe him... still cautiously. Her behavior made him rather curious, actually. Why would she act this way? There was as if she expected a certain reaction from him. His own curiosity threw him off-guard, his initial shallow thoughts brushed away for the time being. How long has she been here? The Koga Village was not very big. He assumed he'd run into her earlier. She's strikingly white! How could a Dog miss her? Especially a Koga.

"I had hoped to seek out some training past what my parents could give me."

Training? Kaito's ears perked at the statement, intrigued. He coughed, clearing his throat before he simply had to clarify. "Um, training? What kind of training?" He got somewhat defensive at this point. He stood up, his legs quivering. No, not with fear or anxiety; it was strength and power. He was not a Dog who would betray his home, his clan. His nose wrinkled slightly, his eyes pressed on hers. "Who are you? Where are you from, Naoto?" His voice was passively aggressive. He was suspicious. She did not look of Koga heritage. Any other "training" would threaten that of Koga's, and he would not be so keen on such an idea.

It wasn't like he was demeaning her because of her bloodlines, per se. Kaito was a proud Dog. Proud of his heritage. Proud of his own genetic-bound training. Obviously he did not get out much; he wanted to make sure his homeland was safe, and he didn't trust anyone else to do it. He knew he'd do it right.

As she had predicted, the mention of training was enough to pull the male out of caution and into a more guarded realm. She could not blame him. She couldn't blame any of the Kogas, even if Naoto did feel that the prejudice that was still prominent between what was left of both clans was backwards and certainly not needed anymore. Doku himself had said that without the Iga, the Koga had faltered. It was true that the reasoning behind that was because they lost their opponents and their will to be as they once were and that she found backwards as well... but the simple fact of the matter was the Iga were mostly gone. There were survivors that dotted the landscape like the fleeting dotting of clouds on a brilliantly sunny day; no more.

If either of their histories were to survive there was a very great likelihood that the remaining Iga and the remaining Koga must work together. Such a suggestion was not one that she could make, however.

"Whatever I may be allowed to gain," Naoto answered carefully. In truth, she thought she would learn very little in the way of training. Her reception so far had not been what she had hoped -- for she was naive enough to assume things might have cooled down, that she might have been welcomed for her mother if not her father -- and there had only been one Koga so far that had even been mildly polite. Tess, however, did not hold much weight when compared to Doku or Kaori. The older female had given her leave to remain and seek her answers and training... for now, anyways.

Naoto had a feeling that could change in a flash.

The young female watched Kaito as he stood, trembling just slightly with the need for answers and action. As always, she had to choose her words carefully lest she make an enemy out of a Koga. "I am exactly as I claim to be; I am Naoto. My parents resided within Mutsu although once one of them called this place home." Naoto knew very well the fact that she was not giving the entire truth but what she was giving him was the truth. It did not take any great stretch of the mind to make the connection between the fact that one of her parents was a Koga and no longer lived here; combine that with her white fur and it was obvious as anything in front of one's nose.

What the hot-blooded young male would choose to do with that information, however, was up in the air. He might be like Tess and decide to simply wait and watch; ready to defend but willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. He was young enough to not have any personal experience in the wars of the past though that meant little when tales were told. He might have a relative like Doku who missed only the fighting that the Igas had brought and nothing else.

This proud Koga couldn't help but nearly block out any type of reasoning or details that could be vital for such a story. His mind was focused fully on the continuously growing suspicion he was suffering through. He did not care. He was a stubborn canine, and he wasn't one to falter, even if the perpetrator were to be a female, and quite an attractive one in his standards. Kaito was not blind. He knew when to shut down his dogging intentions and immediately take on a much more serious poker face.

"Whatever I may be allowed to gain."

'... Allowed to gain'? This little tidbit was interesting to him. The Koga were a proud bloodline of Dog, and they would teach those in need. But why would she have to gain permission? Was she in need of such training to clear up debts from the past? Was she running from someone or something? Is she planning something? Sure, Kaito may as well be considered paranoid, but all possibilities must be lain on the table. Being prepared for anything and everything was a necessity in Kaito's personal opinion.

"I am exactly as I claim to be; I am Naoto. My parents resided within Mutsu although once one of them called this place home."

At this statement, his black mangled ears pivoted around toward her. His crystalline eyes narrowed further. He lifted his white-splattered paws, beginning a shark-like path around her, scanning her from top to bottom. Something wasn't right. One of her parents once called this home... He did not know how old her parents were when she was conceived and how old they are now. This was a major factor. His thick tail remained low, occasionally brushing the sides of the snowy bitch. Finally, he paused, right back in the spot where he was originally, making himself seem bigger with raised fur and dominant posture.

Kaito was not a dumbass; he kept up on his history. As far as he could remember, the area he lived in now was once in Iga territory, over 10 years ago. Any Dog could live past that age. For all he knew, this 'one' of Naoto's parents could have been an Iga. It would explain her white fur and overall physical stature. A Dog of Koga descent would not look like such (unless, perhaps, it was an albino, but that's wishful thinking). Part Iga, and maybe some husky, husky to perhaps explain the gray head marking.

"You're of Iga blood." Kaito was not fond of that fact. Koga being allied with Ou, which was co-led by an Iga, was bad enough. Now to have an Iga descendant stroll into his territory with pleasure and ignorance? That was crossing the line. If she wasn't chased out of this territory for a reason, well, that reason was not acceptable. If no one would do it, then he'd just have to do it himself. "Explain to me why I shouldn't rough you up and run you out of here right now." At least he gave her warning. He would know if she'll lie or not. Her hesitation when she was explaining that she'd been "allowed" to stay here was a curious reaction. His face remained stone-cold, his pupils narrowed with his muzzle slightly wrinkled. He wanted the whole truth... He wanted it now. He knew she was hiding something judging by her unexplained, short answers.

Naoto remained seated as still as she had been, allowing the male to circle her. She knew the move; the fact that he was examining her from all angles, sizing her up and down, was not a new thing to her. She had been scrutinized from head to toe since she arrived. She had tentative permission from an elder to remain but she was not wholly naive. She knew that if she brought her case to Kaori with the cries that Kaito had determined on his own that she should be removed... well, loyalties in this clan lay far beyond her at the moment. Her coloration did her injustice.

She dipped her head in recognition of his words. "Yes, half Iga blood,", she acknowledge the correctness of his words. There was no reason to deny it. She had not done so since she arrived. She was proud of her heritage, both of her heritages, and saw no reason to lie. Even if she had intended to lie, nothing would save her from her general physique and color. She looked like the Iga that the Koga hated so. There was no hiding it in the least.

The brown eyes blinked once before a faint smile tinged the edges of her muzzle. It was a weary sort of a smile. She had known it to be too good to be true that the younger dog had seemed cautious and willing to speak to her. Now that her heritage was out, however, he was not so willing and was as determined as many others to see her gone. Once again, she had to choose her words carefully. Complaints of the young male roughing her up and chasing her out would fall on deaf ears, even if she had been given permission she was certain. Naoto did not want that nor did she want to truly raise his ire more than she had already. She was certain she was making no friends here but she did not want to make enemies, either. Even a neutral relationship was better than an enemy.

As he drew back in front of her, face drawn into a mask of cold irritation, she knew she could do little else but tell him what truth there was. He could choose to perceive it as a lie or to believe her; she would at least known she had told him what was true. "Half Iga blood, my father; half Koga, my mother." The slim female allowed a moment for that to digest. The rage it would generally gain her was one she was growing used to, even if she hated it. There might even come a day where she felt secure enough in her place to where she would challenge those who snarled and snapped at those words... today, though, she did not think would be that day. "I have already spoken to several of your clan; Tess, Doku, Itzal. I have been given audience with an elder, Kaori; it is she who questioned and found that that I am worthy of being allowed to remain within the village and train." For now. That was always the unspoken words attached to the promises. For now.

"I do not question the wisdom of my elders," Naoto offered this last bit without being prompted. It was mostly the truth, for she trusted the judgment of elders and had been raised to do so... even if it was faintly hypocritical for she judged and questioned their prejudice. It was also a verbal blow; pointing out that in threatening and attempting to chase her off, he was doing so. It was not exactly a good move on her part, considering he could still do what he was threatening to. Yet she could not help herself. The normally demure and calm demeanor had an inner spark hidden that many of the ninjas had.

"Yes, half Iga blood."

Even after his comment of his assumption that this female was an Iga, he still didn't expect such a response. Half? What the hell does she mean by half? At this point, Kaito had become defensive with confusion and uncertainty. For all he knew, she could be lying so she could somehow be off the hook for "telling the truth". His blue eyes caught Naoto's brown, and saw the small trickle of a smile form along her muzzle. It wasn't some sort of sinister or mischievous smile, but one of weariness and hope, it seemed.

Kaito thought to himself that he had to relax a little. His mind was still wrapped up with the idea of what her other half of her bloodline could consist of. He did not want to acknowledge Koga for the idea that an Iga and a Koga would never "get together". The corners of his jawline twitched, blankly staring at this mind-puzzling female. Yes, of course, he was still young, and thus had not experienced the world. No Dog his age would have (maybe for the exception of those "Legends of Ou" Dogs). Koga was not as willing to take in a random Dog for defensive reasons, but if what this female has exclaimed as true, then she must have had good reason to stay. We don't just welcome anybody. He was foul enough having the knowledge that Weed and his small pack had dumped their young'uns on the Kogas... Don't waste your life. Take our places... blah blah blah.

"Half Iga blood, my father; half Koga, my mother. I have already spoken to several of your clan; Tess, Doku, Itzal. I have been given audience with an elder, Kaori; it is she who questioned and found that that I am worthy of being allowed to remain within the village and train."

... The fuck? He drew his head back, alarmed at his avoided guess of half Iga-half Koga. He did not want to know how that could have happened, but yet he wanted to. He wasn't going to ask though; that would be childish to blurt out, "What?! What's the story behind that?!" It wasn't his business. If she wanted to tell, she'd let it loose, but not with force. He twirled his large ears backwards a bit, contemplating studiously. How is she worthy? Kaito supposed she wasn't the one to be snapped at; her dumbass parents were. The ninja Dog inhaled strongly before lowering his head with hesitation and humbleness.

"I apologize for my behavior, miss Naoto. I did not know." He lifted his head slowly, only enough to catch her eyes. "May I ask for your forgiveness?"

The white furred female watched as the young male reacted in abject confusion to her words. The look upon his face only continued to grow more and more confused and shocked as he took in her brief story. If she had walked up to him and slapped him across the muzzle with a paw or slammed her head into his chest with all of her force she did not think she could have gotten such a look ever. Her words, though, brought it out in him. The Koga male was, in all honesty, showing a much different face than most of them. Many of the dogs had guessed at her lineage -- perhaps because they were so willing to jump to the conclusion of the worst possible scenario. There had been anger, there had been words that she should not even be alive. There had not been such outright shock.

And there had not been...

It was Naoto's turn for her wearied smile to turn to a look of shock. Kaito drew his head up and looked straight at her before asking for forgiveness. For all her glib words and her ability to defend herself with her speech, she had no idea how to respond to this. So far as she could tell, the apology was sincere. He might not like the idea or even her but he was willing to accept that, for whatever reason, someone had allowed her presence.

She had two choices. She could accept the apology and possibly come off sounding wrong or she could deny that it was ever needed which might make him feel as if she was throwing it back in his face. Having earned such words from any Koga, this Koga, she did not want to speak wrongly. Finally, she dipped her head low; always be polite. It was what had gotten her through so much of the ire within the Koga village. "Your words do me a great honor. You could have had it without having even asked." It was a tiresome thing to be mistrusted and called out for the actions of her parents, yes, but she was willing to work towards at least the arrangements that she had made for training. If that meant forgiving every harsh word then that was what she would do.

The half-breed raised her head again and met Kaito's eye for a second time. "I wished to come here to learn the ways of my ancestors and to learn the history behind both clans. I have always been curious about everything and always wanted answers." There was a soft sigh. "Some might consider it a fool's adventure, I suppose," she offered with another faint smile. In a way, she was trying to further dissuade him from the obvious fears of a dog obviously descended from Iga coming in here. They might think she wanted all of their secrets and training to do... to do what? Well, she wasn't completely certain what they would think she would do with that information. Perhaps use it against them. She couldn't see the point of that.

Again, perhaps her naivete was showing.

Kaito lifted his head rather slow, regaining his original posture he had been before the small rocky situation they found themselves in for a few moments. He tilted his fluffy yet mangled ears, his scarred face wiped clean from any harsh moments. Most times, come to think of it, the young Koga was able to recover quickly from adrenaline or testosterone rushes. The leftover remnants of his past injuries were results of such rushes, but the pain did not last (even though there was no chance of having euphoric hormones pumped into his bloodstream to seduce the pain). It was his state of mind. That is what made a Koga, a Koga.

"Your words do me a great honor. You could have had it without having even asked."

This reply would be tossed away with a shrug. It was his decision to say what he said, and there weren't any ways he could take those words back now. Although, as he initially noticed, she was still polite, and controlled her feelings when the skittish Koga released his suspicions. It was an admirable trait she possessed. If he didn't know better, he'd assume that many females were like this, since this Dog society was still controlled by males.

"I wished to come here to learn the ways of my ancestors and to learn the history behind both clans. I have always been curious about everything and always wanted answers. Some might consider it a fool's adventure, I suppose."

Well, he was a little baffled as to what he could respond to her reasons for being here. It wasn't uncommon to hear such, but it seemed a little unsettling because this female was of Koga blood, but yet not from the Koga Village. It was the only place Kogas exclusively called home; he couldn't think of any other settlements. Shikokus traveled here long ago, and were bound together by (bred) blood. Not many known Shikokus lived anywhere else. Still, Kaito's mind flirted with several different responses he could use, but he couldn't pick out a specific one.

Kaito decided to go by his gut and just let his jaws flap. His head swiveled slightly from side to side before his black teddy-bear ears perked up and stiffened his body to maintain the proud Koga posture. "Well, I do not look down on your intentions. I consider them much more reasonable than some other Dogs only wishing to join a legendary cause." He paused for a moment. Ancestors? "Well, I can really expose you to your Koga ancestry, as you could probably tell. I am only knowledgeable of one surviving Iga, and that is Akame from Ou. I hear he is a true-number back in the days." Mentioning that name was rather foul-tasting to him, but there was a part of him that obliged him to help out a fellow Koga, whether halfie or not. Might as well.

The lithe female watched Kaito raise his head. Much of the tenseness from before had drained out of him though she did not think he would ever be truly relaxed around her. Perhaps one day, but certainly not today. She was certain that her fur color and her predecessors would ensure that for a long, long time. Then again, after her previous encounters she should expect nothing less.

She watched the larger male shrug and then seem to turn inward. Her words hadn't been anything overly deep but she supposed they took time to process nonetheless. She was an unknown quantity for the Kogas to deal with. She was the enemy, yet not. She was polite and soft-spoken, yet she was determined. Aside from wanting to snarl or dismiss her, they seemed to not know what to do or say to her. It was that same delicate balance where they all were caught in between simple acceptance and in bullying her out. No one seemed to know which was the right response.

Naoto dipped her head again in acknowledgment of his words. "Many dogs seek out legends to become one themselves. The idea of such is tempting but I would much rather have answers, to see and hear and delve into the stories of the past from the jaws of those who experienced it or who had relatives who did." Perhaps it was a quest to unite her two halves together in her own mind. Certainly she had always dreamed of being someone to unite the actual remaining clans but she was fast finding that idea was a child's dream. One day, if her own influence and prestige had grown, she might take the step to taking both of the histories and passing them down in an unbiased form; a historian of sorts. That was a long, long way in the future, though, and only a scant idea.

"One day, I hope to meet Akame as well." Naoto would love to meet the famous legend. The stories from his perspective would be an interesting twist. He might be more willing to welcome her than the Koga clan. Yet, currently, the draw towards the aged ninja was quite less. He was still unreal, in a way, whereas the Kogas were right in front of her. She had spoken to them, she was sitting across from one right now. "Right now, this is more than enough for a simple start to the journey. I am here and we are speaking; it's a good beginning."

It was another simple and perhaps naive view. Kaito had relented in his angry suspicion but that didn't mean he was exactly accepting, either. The other Kogas hadn't been welcoming exactly. Yet she was here, Kaito hadn't run her off or stalked off in disgust. He was a handsome young male, a perfect example of a Koga, and while he wasn't exactly ecstatic about her presence he had apologized and was willing to speak. That was a good start, as far as she was concerned.
